Things To Be Thankful For #30: A Christmas Tree!

Tree stands line the streets of NYC and a beautiful scent of balsam fir and pine wafts through the air!  It must be time to find a Christmas tree!  This is a time of year that Mike and I look forward to every year, and 2014 brings an extra hint of excitement because it's our first Christmas as husband and wife!

While we claim to be pretty serious about our search for the perfect tree, we usually just end up singing this song as we make our selection: The Happiest Christmas Tree

Throughout the year we try to collect Christmas ornaments from our travels, and adventures.  When it comes time to decorate the tree, we love to look back and remember the wonderful places we've been and the amazing people we've met along the way.  Our hearts swell with gratitude as we carefully place our ornaments on the tree.

Wishing you and yours a happy holiday season, and a very Merry Christmas!

Things To Be Thankful For #29: The Meatball Shop!

The Meatball Shop is hands down one of my favorite restaurants in all of NYC!  Their meatballs are innovative and delicious, and don't even get me started on their amazing ice cream cookie sandwiches (homemade cookies and ice cream!?! What more could you want!?)!

Last night, Mike and I found ourselves without Thanksgiving leftovers, and TMS came to the rescue with their delicious gobble gobble meatballs served with mashed potatoes, gobble gobble gravy and cranberry sauce! For dessert? An ice cream cookie sandwich of course; pecan shortbread cookies with pumpkin ice cream! Heavenly!

I'm convinced that The Meatball Shop has the power to improve a bad day, or to make a great day even BETTER!  They have locations all over NYC, and they even serve brunch! Thanks, Meatball Shop!

Things To Be Thankful For #25: Katherine &www.katherinemilesjones.com !

I am thankful for this beautiful lady and her incredible talent every single day, but what better day to celebrate her than her birthday?  Katherine is one of the most kind hearted, fun loving, brilliantly talented people that you will ever meet!  Her joy is contagious and you can feel it through every single photo that she takes!  If you're looking for a photographer for a wedding, special event, family party, holiday card, etc, be sure to check out www.katherinemilesjones.com !

Below are a just a few of the perfect moments that Katherine captured on the day that Mike and I got married:

Things To Be Thankful For #24: Giving Thanks

I read this great quote today and it spoke to me so clearly that I just had to share it with you:

"When your mind is occupied with thanksgiving, you have no time for worrying or complaining. If you practice thankfulness consistently, negative thought patterns will gradually grow weaker and weaker... a grateful heart... will fill you with joy and peace."

Great, right? I loved reading this because it so clearly reminded me that if we are constantly thankful, we don't have time for negative thoughts of worry, fear, or doubt!  Thoughts of gratitude generate joy and peace within our souls!

With Thanksgiving just a few days away, I want to challenge you to keep your mind focused on all that you have to be thankful for.  Give thanks for all things and see if your heart isn't immediately filled with happiness!

Things To Be Thankful For #23: Acts Of Kindness

Nothing warms my heart like witnessing acts of kindness. While many consider New York City to be a tough, unfriendly city, I see signs of love and generosity all over Manhattan.  Just a few days ago I witnessed a stranger helping a woman carry a large stroller down the stairs to the subway, and before that a man crouching down on the ground to help tie a woman's shoe.  I've observed people holding the door for one another, people picking up dropped items for one another, and friends helping friends put their coats on in the winter time.  These acts of kindness may sound small, but you never know how much they may have improved someone's day.  Next time you're out walking around your city, keep your eyes peeled, and I bet you will witness acts of kindness too!

Things To Be Thankful For #22: Warby Parker

Warby Parker has quickly become one of my favorite companies.  Not only do they make awesome specs, but they also donate a pair of glasses for each pair of glasses you purchase!  They offer various options to "try before you buy," which I absolutely love.  At www.warbyparker.com you can try their "virtual try on," where you upload a picture of yourself to their website and virtually try on glasses, or their "home try on," option where you have the chance to try out 5 pairs of glasses for 5 days!  With affordable prices, excellent customer service, and awesome glasses and sunglasses, Warby Parker just simply can't be beat!

Things To Be Thankful For #20: Warmth

The past few weeks I've found myself working outside quite a bit.  With how cold the weather has become, I've realized how lucky we are to have ways to find warmth!  We are so fortunate that our cars offer heat, our offices offer heat, and our homes offer heat.  It's important to acknowledge what a gift warmth truly is because so many people find themselves without it.  Next time you're all bundled up, cozied up to a buddy, snuggled up under a warm blanket, or hugging a warm cup of coffee remember how lucky you are!

Also, check out this awesome kickstart campaign that's looking to keep NYC residents warm this winter: heatseeknyc !

Things To Be Thankful For #19: Advice About Love

Some say that good advice is hard to come by, but I don't believe that.  I think good advice surrounds us, and it's just a matter of taking the time to listen.

A couple of months before Mike and I got married, a wonderful friend gave us a great and heartwarming book called Forever Love.  The book is written by the grandson of a couple who have been married for over 50 years.  Inside, you uncover 50 short stories (about a page and a half each) full of secrets for successful marriages, shared by 50 couples who have been married for over 50 years! It's beautiful!

Each entry shares advice from those who have come before us, and whether you're married, dating, or single I think this book could be applicable to your life, and the way you look at relationships with friends, family, and loved ones.  The stories are full of joy, laughter, and even challenges, but they all have the same ending: LOVE.

Things To Be Thankful For #18: National Peanut Butter Month

Oh, friends, guess what? November is NATIONAL PEANUT BUTTER MONTH, and that is certainly cause for celebration! For as long as I can remember I have been a lover of peanut butter.  On most days I prefer chunky peanut butter, but there are days that some smooth PB just can't be beat.  Whether it's paired with bread, bananas, apples, waffles, pancakes, cakes, cookies, you name it, peanut butter never fails to put a smile on my face! Apparently there are some other people out there in the world that feel the same way, which is why I'm also thankful for this awesome website: http://peanutbutterlovers.com ! Happy National Peanut Butter Month!

Things To Be Thankful For #17: That it's never too late to pursue your dreams!

I believe with every fiber of my being that dreams are put into our hearts for a reason.   These hopes and desires have been placed within us because they are our destiny.

It's so easy to try to talk ourselves out of our dreams because we feel scared, unprepared, or as if our dreams are impossible, but I am here to tell you that when you are destined for something, nothing can keep you from it.  If you're sitting there thinking, 'Betsy must be talking about someone else, I'll never see my dreams come true,' you're wrong! All things are possible and YOU are destined to fulfill your dreams! Absolutely nothing can stop you! Don't let the size of your dreams intimidate you. When it comes to dreams, I say the bigger the better!

Tomorrow is a new day; set a new goal, dream a new dream, and while you're at it, make it a big one! I know you can do it!

Things To Be Thankful For #16: Fresh Flowers

I always love to have fresh flowers in our apartment, as I believe that flowers have the power to uplift spirits and brighten all rooms.  While roses, garden roses, and gerbera daisies are my absolute favorite, I know that all flowers are beautiful. Their delicate petals filled with vibrant hues make them irresistible! Whether given as a gift, or purchased on your own, flowers make each day a bit more colorful!

I often find that the end of a work week can leave me feeling a bit down but I've noticed that picking up a bouquet of flowers on my way home somehow leaves me feeling energized and inspired!  Just this weekend I was on my way home from work and feeling a bit discouraged when Mike surprised me with roses, and quickly turned my mood around!  Next time you find you're having a lousy day, pick up a bunch of flowers in a nice bright color to lift your spirits.

Things To Be Thankful For #15: BRUNCH

Oh man, I could go on and on and on about how thankful I am for BRUNCH! What's not to love about a meal that allows you to eat anything you want between the hours of 10am and 3pm!  You want eggs? SURE! A hamburger? Why not! French toast stuffed with Nutella and peanut butter? You got it!  You can eat anything your heart desires AND you get to have endless cups of coffee, and even adult beverages if you choose! Life is good!

Next time you're having a bad day, stop by your favorite restaurant for brunch and see if that doesn't turn your day around!

Things To Be Thankful For #14: Saying "Yes!"

Sometimes in life, you just have to say "Yes!"

There are days that maybe you feel tired, uncertain, scared, or unprepared, but you find the strength to say "yes!" and the day is so much better for it.  Maybe this means saying yes to embarking upon a new adventure.  Perhaps this means saying yes to going out with friends, yes to going on a blind date, or even yes to a new relationship.  Maybe this means saying yes to taking a new job, or yes to making a big move.

No matter how big or small, saying "yes!" can make all the difference in the world.  Next time you're feeling intimidated try saying "yes!" and see what happens.

Things To Be Thankful For, Lucky #13: My Grandma!

Today is my incredible Grandmother's Birthday!  She is one of the most joyful, loving, and caring people that you will ever meet.  Her smile is contagious and her laughter warms your heart!  My Grandma embraces the happy moments of life, always looking for the best in things, and she doesn't sweat the small stuff.  She loves her friends, family, and neighbors, and always takes time to help people in need, no matter how big or small the task at hand is.  My Grandma sees the beauty in life, and as a result that beauty is reflected in her, as my Grandma is beautiful both inside and out.  Every single day I thank God for allowing me to be this incredible woman's granddaughter because she makes this world a world full of so much love and laughter.

Happy Birthday, G-Ma! We all love you so much!

Things To Be Thankful For #12: Holiday Drinks In Holiday Cups At Starbucks!

I look forward to this season every year! It's that special time when red holiday cups make their way back to Starbucks.  I don't know why but holiday drinks just seem to taste better out of those famous red cups!

Red cups mark the beginning of gingerbread latte and peppermint mocha season, and for 2014, the introduction of a brand new drink too; The Chestnut Praline Latte! I tried one today, and it was delightful (as if we expected anything less)!

If you stop by Starbucks Today-November 16th between 2-5 p.m. you can take advantage of their buy one holiday beverage, get one free deal! Grab a friend, grab a holiday drink, and go get happy!

Things To Be Thankful For #11: The Brave Men And Women Who Serve Our Country!

Words never seem like enough on Veteran's Day, do they?  When I think about the brave men and women in our military who have given up their safety, their comfort, their time with family and friends, and even their precious lives, I feel completely overcome with gratitude, and overwhelmed by their actions of love.  Is there any act more beautiful in life, than to sacrifice your own needs for someone else's?  It is a true act of love, and we are so blessed to live in a country full of such selfless heroes.

Today I would like to recognize my grandfathers, my father, my godfather, my cousin, my great uncles, and my friends who have served in the military.  Our country would be nothing without you.  Thank you for protecting us, and for giving up everything to offer us safety and freedom.

God Bless you, and God Bless America!

Things To Be Thankful For #10: Even On A Bad Day, God Is Good!

Last Friday I was asked to work as a featured extra in a new movie that would be filming on November 10th.  Casting informed me that I would need to react on camera and asked if I was prepared to do so.  I told them that I was, and that I was thrilled about this opportunity!

When I arrived on set on Monday morning I was immediately whisked away to "hair and makeup" where I was given the sides for the scene that I would be filming.  The makeup artist informed me that I was heavily featured in this scene, and that I would need to cry.  I began to read over the scene and while I was starting to feel nervous, I knew that I could do it.  Hair and makeup finished their magic, I thanked them, and I was taken to set to begin my work.

I waited on the sidelines with excitement, setting my mind for the scene, watching the camera crew setting the angles, and observing the stand-in holding his mark.  The director called for a rehearsal, but I was not used, which seemed a bit strange seeing as I thought this was the scene I was in.  Next the director called action, and they began filming.  Still, it seemed a bit weird that they didn't need me for the scene, but I figured they were filming an "establishing shot," before they moved on to the scene I was in.  Soon after though, they moved on to the next shot, where again, I was not brought in to work on the scene.  This happened two more times, and I knew in my heart that something was wrong.  I looked at one of the crew members standing next to me, and he must have realized what I was waiting for.  He glanced at me and casually said, "I heard they cut your scene."  After all of that, my scene had been cut.  I felt like the wind had been knocked out of me.  I looked at him and said, "oh okay, no problem," and walked away from where the crew was filming.

Feeling discouraged, I glanced down at my phone and saw this beautiful picture (no Instagram filter needed) that I had captured earlier that morning.  This photo immediately spoke to me, telling me that even on a bad day, God is still good.  It reminded me that although I felt forgotten about, God had not forgotten about me, and he had not forgotten about the dreams that he put in my heart.  The God who created this beautiful view created me and you, and he has wonderful and perfect plans for us and our lives!

I wanted to share this story with you today so that if you, like me, have been feeling very discouraged lately, that you would know that you are not alone.  I wanted to remind you that God has NOT forgotten you! The dreams that are in your heart are there for a reason, and they will come to pass.  If God can bring you to it, he can bring you through it! Keep dreaming and keep believing.

I am cheering for you, and I can't wait to see what God does next in your life!

Even on bad days, God is good!

Things To Be Thankful For #9: Notes & Letters

I've always loved to send and receive notes, cards, and letters!  In a world that is so go go go, it's nice to take a moment to simply breathe, read, and smile.  While we constantly strive to become multitasking masters, it seems that reading is one of the only actions that allows us to live in the moment.  When we read, we find that it's hard to think of the past, or the future, but somehow we find that it's easy to focus on exactly what is in front of us.

Growing up my parents and I often left each other notes around the house.  Although we spent most of our time together, uncovering these little notes still made each day a bit brighter, and reminded us just how much we loved one another.  Later, in college and in the years after, my roommates and I would leave each other notes of encouragement or write funny sayings on post it notes to make one another smile.  Today, Mike and I love to leave each other notes, and we love sending letters to our friends and family both near and far.

Like rediscovering something that you once knew but had forgotten, notes remind us that we are loved and appreciated.  These thoughtful words help us to take a break in a busy day, to live in the moment, to breath, and to smile.

Today a very dear friend of mine wrote me a letter and it not only brightened my day, but made me feel loved and encouraged!  Have you taken the time to write to someone lately?

Things To Be Thankful For #8: National Cappuccino Day

If you love coffee as much as I do then this is absolutely a day to be thankful for! It's National Cappuccino Day! According to historians the first cappuccino was created in Italy in the 1600s, and the drink was named after an Italian order of monks, the Catholic Capuchins, that wore dark brown hoods, similar to the color of the drink! Who knew?

Happy National Cappuccino Day, from NYC!

Things To Be Thankful For #7: Deep Fried Candy Corn & The Arrival Of The NYC Christmas Tree!

Today brings a double dose of things to be thankful for!

{Part 1} I spotted an article about a brilliant human that decided to deep fry candy corn and I felt that that was absolutely worthy of a blog post, but when I told Mike about it, he was a little bit less than impressed. Ha!  I still felt the need to share the deep fried candy corn because I'm thankful for the creativity and thought that went into creating this treat.  If you have candy corn left over from Halloween like we do, and you're feeling adventurous, you may want to check out this deep fried candy corn business.

{Part 2} I try to celebrate each month in it's entirety before looking ahead to the next month, but sometimes I find myself looking ahead to future months and their holidays (I just can't help it)! I am so excited for Thanksgiving (who doesn't love a holiday that's all about eating, napping, a parade, and giving thanks???) however today something HUGE happened that we just have to be thankful for! Today, the 2014 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree made it's way to NYC!  The illumination ceremony won't happen until December 3rd, but the arrival of this beautiful tree has already created a buzz of joy, love, and Christmas spirit around NYC! Words can't express how grateful I am for that!

Things To Be Thankful For #6: Wholehearted Love

Meghan is one of the most thoughtful people that I know, and I feel so lucky to be able to call her my cousin!  She loves people wholeheartedly, and takes time to tell her friends and family just how special they are to her.  I admire her actions, and I feel inspired by her love for others.  Each day offers the chance to fully love one another, and Meghan's passion reminds me that we should use every chance we get to tell people just how special they are to us.

Thank you for taking the time to read this today.  YOU are special to me!

Things To Be Thankful For #5: Music

Last night Mike and I were walking our dog, Teddy, when we came across a piano on the sidewalk.   Yes, a piano was just sitting on the sidewalk (only in New York City, right?).  As we approached it from the back I assumed the keys would be missing, but when we turned to face the front of the piano I saw that the keys were there, and the pedals too!  Obviously I couldn't resist walking over and plunking out a few notes.  The piano wasn't perfectly in tune, but it sounded pretty incredible for a piano on the sidewalk.  Running my fingers along the keys immediately brought a smile to my face, and reminded me just how lucky we are to live in a world that is full of music!

Isn't it incredible the way that music can instantly change your mood?  Just hearing the first few notes of your favorite song can brighten your day and leave you feeling energized.  Next time you're having lousy day play some tunes and see if that doesn't help to turn things around for you!

Things To Be Thankful For #4: Celebrating!

A day is just a day unless you take the time to make it special.  Our lives are full of so many moments that deserve to be celebrated, and yet we forget to take the time to celebrate them.  We often feel like these moments are small, and so they go unnoticed, but they shouldn't!  As we talked about in Things To Be Thankful For #1, each day is a gift, and it deserves to be celebrated!

Have a wedding anniversary, birthday, or work anniversary? Go celebrate!  Run a mile at the gym? Go celebrate!  Have an anniversary of meeting your best friend? Go celebrate!

Today I am celebrating one month of being married to the most loving, wonderful and handsome man alive!

What are you celebrating today?

Things To Be Thankful For #3: Choosing Joy

I want to remind you that YOU have been given a gift today. You have been given the gift of choice, and with that gift you are able to choose joy.  In fact, you are given this gift every day and you are able to choose joy over and over and over again!

When life throws something difficult at you, choose joy.  When life throws something upsetting at you, choose joy.  When life throws something disappointing at you, choose joy.  And man, when life throws a miracle at you, choose joy!

Just remember to choose joy, and keep choosing it!

Things To Be Thankful For #2: Encouragers

Some days we wake up and we feel less than perfect.  Maybe we feel so far from perfect that we don't even feel like trying at all.  On these days, aren't we so lucky to have encouragers in our lives?

Encouragers are the people that come along side us and give us the strength to continue when we can't find strength or energy within ourselves.  Encouragers are the people that tell us to keep going when all we want to do is give up.  Encouragers are the people that whisper our dreams back to us, reminding us to believe in ourselves, and to believe in our abilities.

I want to remind you that wherever you are in life today, YOU are perfect. YOU are exactly where you are meant to be, and YOU have everything inside of you to accomplish every dream that you have ever dared to dream!

Today I am most thankful for my outstanding encourager, my husband.  After a year and a half of forgotten blogging, Mike encouraged me to work on Spreading Sunshine again.

Things To Be Thankful For #1: Things To Be Thankful For (This will make sense soon)!

Today I am thankful that there is always something to be thankful for!

Our world is full of so much beauty but many days we forget to enjoy it.  Life gets away with us and we find ourselves busy with our work, our families, and our to do lists. It's easy to miss sunshine beaming through the trees, or that stranger that lets you cut in front of them for your morning coffee when you are late for work, or a happy puppy on the street... but shouldn't we take a second and enjoy these moments?

Last week, my sweet cousin commented on one of my Instagram photos saying "You are always so happy!"  I responded by thanking her, but reminding her that I don't always wake up happy.  In fact there are many days that I feel discouraged or frustrated.  However, it's the small moments in life that remind me of hope, that remind me of joy, that remind me of love, that make life worth it, and I want to share those moments with you.  Whispers of hope, joy, and love surround us, and when we recognize them, they fill our hearts with bliss!

Today I want to challenge you to find something beautiful in the day, and to be thankful for it.  Be thankful for your friends, family, and coworkers, be thankful for that Starbucks coffee, be thankful for that beautiful sunset! Whatever it is, just be thankful!

Each day is a gift, go open yours!
